The Karakorum Dirt Track

Those who know me well will be aware of my obsession with good tarmac, and will understand how delighted I was to discover that the Chinese (some of Pakistan’s more benevolent foreign string-pullers) are busy resurfacing the KKH, so that it looks like this.

You will also share my dismay on discovering that this resurfacing is still very much a work in progress, and that most of the Highway north of Gilgit currently looks like this.

It hasn’t always been this bad – there used to be tarmac all the way, but they’ve ripped it all up in preparation for the new layer, which has yet to be laid. Apparently it’ll be like this all the way to the border.

If you’re planning on riding the KKH this year, be warned.

Navigating terrain like this on a road bike with no suspension and almost 50kg of luggage is Not Fun, and would not rank among the highlights of my expedition, were it not for views like this.

And this.

And this.

Who needs tarmac?
